Jesus calls us to wash each other’s feet, to love one another as he loves us. Scripture tells us practical ways that Christians are to love one another.
What is the relationship between the Church and evangelism? The picture of the God’s city, the nations streaming into it through ever-open gates gives us a biblical picture: Our Gospel is the Gospel of the Kingdom, growth is integral to our identity and evangelism is linked inextricably with our life together.
The third mission of the Church is to overflow with the King’s grace, revealing the abundant goodness of God’s character and of creation by literally “doing good” to the world around. The river of the water of life flows from the throne of God, through the streets of the City of God and out into the world bringing healing and life. This picture is a picture of God’s grace flowing out of the Church transforming the world around and bringing glory to God. We are saved to do good works, and this overflow to the world commends and authenticates the Gospel, deepens our knowledge of God and enriches our experience of the life of the Spirit.
Church Vision – Week 1 – The City of God – What is the mission of the church?
Jesus’ command to wash one another’s feet points to the humility Christians should have in loving others. But in particular it points to the chief way we exercise that loving humility, that is the way we deal with each other’s sin within the Church. The Church is a community of grace and it displays God’s glory and power most clearly when its members exercise grace towards one another in dealing with sin.
